Flights of Fantasy: December 2021

Flights of Fantasy: December 2021

With holiday plans and traveling around to visit family, I found myself focusing more on fantasy and fictional stories, rather than nonfiction - as well as completing one whole series, as opposed to reading several separate series. So, if you enjoy escaping reality and visiting other worlds, this is definitely the reading list for you to check out!

Teen Titans: Beast Boy Loves Raven*

By: Kami Garcia, Illustrated by: Gabriel Picolo

Details: Graphic Novel, Young Adult, Series, Romance, Coming of Age, Superhero, 2021

ISBN-13: 978-1779503862

Synopsis: When their paths converge in Nashville, Raven and Gar can't help but feel a connection, despite the secrets they both try to hide. It will take a great amount of trust and courage to overcome the wounds of their pasts. But can they find acceptance for the darkest parts of themselves? Or maybe even love?

My Thoughts: I’ve shared my love for the mid-2000’s Teen Titans show in a previous list (don’t worry, I won’t make you hear it again), so as you can imagine, I was ecstatic to be able to check out the newest one in this series from my library. Just as charming and fun as the first two, while also exploring new parts of growing up and being a teenager.

*This is the third volume in the Teen Titans series by Garcia and Picolo.

DIE (volumes #1 - 4)*

By: Kieron Gillen, Illustrated by: Stephanie Hans

Details: Graphic Novel, Adult, Series, Fantasy, Paranormal, 2019

ISBN-13: 978-1534312708

Synopsis: DIE is a pitch-black fantasy where a group of forty-something adults have to deal with the returning, unearthly horror they only just survived as teenage role-players.

My Thoughts: I was given this series as a gift for the holidays since I love dark fantasy and role-playing games, and I found myself having a hard time putting them down. I found the characters very compelling and relatable, particularly to the parts of ourselves that many of us try to hide. I highly recommend sharing with your RPG gang (or using it as inspiration next time you’re the GM).

*For ease and to avoid any spoilers, I’ve only listed the information for the first book, DIE: Fantasy Heartbreaker.
